What is OOL?

OOL (Orthodox Student Association of Finland, Ortodoksinen Opiskelijaliitto) is an open community where all Orthodox youth, students and young adults are welcome. The idea of OOL is to open the way to Church, together with helping young people to find life in Christ through the sacramental life of the Church. It aims at strengthening its members and bringing Orthodox faith, hope and love into their everyday lives.

OOL organizes courses, weekly meetings, excursions and events. The organization was founded in 1948 by a group of university students, mostly from Helsinki. Originally, OOL was an association for university students alone but in the 1970s other students and young adults were also invited to the membership of the organization. OOL is a member of Syndesmos (World Fellowship of Orthodox Youth), The Finnish Syndesmos Committee (Suomen Syndesmos-toimikunta), WSCF (World Student Christian Federation) and NSR (The Nordic Cooperation Committee for Christian Student Movements). It also cooperates with other Orthodox and ecumenical organizations in Finland.

What do we do in OOL?

OOL annually organizes four weekend events or courses: a Winter event during February-March, an Easter event during spring, an Autumn event and an All-Night service (vigil), which always falls of the Elevation of the Cross. The programme of the events consists of lectures and workshops, combined with some less formal social activities.

OOL also participates in activities organized by the Finnish Orthodox Church and other organizations. Contemporary OOL consists of five smaller associations that are located in different cities, Joensuu and Tampere being the largest. These local branches organize their schedules freely, usually having monthly theme meetings. They also organize excursions to visit other associations.

Logos

OOL publishes Logos-magazine, which was founded in 1958. Logos is delivered to the members of OOL as well as to the parishes and organizations involved with OOL. There are also ca 240 subscribers and the magazine is sold in some bookstores, e.g. Akateeminen kirjakauppa. Its edition is about 420 copies.

Staff

The association has a president, a general secretary and a six-member board. The rest of the staff consists of a treasurer and the editor and subeditor of Logos. OOL does not have permanent office or full time workers. The general secretary, the treasurer and the editor of Logos have offices at their homes, and the board meets in various places in different cities. The official post should be addressed to the general secretary.
